KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CP) - Canada may have to pull its force of 17 Leopard 2 tanks out of service in Afghanistan this summer because of the brutal heat. Army commander Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie says that by August the crews of the steel monsters will face temperatures as high as 65 C in the tanks. Leslie said he is not going to lose soldiers because of the heat. He said another option is to restrict use of the Leopards to cooler times of day. The army has been looking at some air-conditioning ideas but Leslie says the best solution is a newer, more modern tank. Leslie has said Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to make a decision later this month on the future of the Leopards.
