The city of Vernon has taken another step closer to moving forward with the the proposed 28 million dollar library and civic complex. Mayor Wayne Lippert and Rick Fairbairn from the Okanagan Regional Library Board signed an agreement today that commits the library board to nine-million dollars in funding. Lippert says the agreement is a positive step forward for the community. "When you have someone, like the library, that steps up with that type of committment to a vision and a plan that we have, that's a very good endorsement because it's coming from other residents, not just in the Greater Vernon area, but oputside the area."
Lippert says a 20 million dollar borrowing bylaw to finance the project will be put to the public for approval by way of the alternate approval process. Should that be rejected, he says the city will look at other ways to fund it. The mayor says the city is also looking at other otions such as grants and partnerships with the Art Gallery and RCMP to share the cost.
