Landing neighbourhood grills council on plans

An Okanagan Landing neighbourhood continues to question the city’s plans for the area. On Monday, council gave two readings to an official community plan amendment that would see the former Lakers Golf site on Cummins Road redesignated from residential and parks to tourist commercial. Another bylaw also moved ahead, and it would see zoning shift from parks to tourist commercial and four-plex residential. But that doesn’t sit well with Cummins Road residents who have been fighting the plan for some time. “The city owns it as parkland already so why not leave it?” said resident Bruce Stobbe. There is also a concern that the city will turn the presently dead-end Cummins Road into a through road, and that will lead to safety issues on the narrow street. “It’s so basic to go around it,” said Stobbe of a bypass. “They need to go down there and see the traffic.” A public hearing on the two proposed bylaws will be held June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at city hall. “They are doing their due diligence but they need to look at all of the issues,” said resident Joel Ellams.
In the past, the city has suggested turning the former Lakers clubhouse over to the Elks Lodge so the city can acquire the Elks’ downtown property. Residents have expressed concern about noise, traffic and having a drinking establishment in the neighbourhood. “Various members of council want things to happen in other parts of the community and that drives this (rezoning),” said Coun. Patrick Nicol. However, staff stated that uses for the Lakers building are a separate issue from zoning. “This property has to be zoned something. It is in non-conformance,” said Leon Gous, chief administrative officer. Gous added that the Lakers building is not allowed in the parks zone. “There are a number of opportunities with that building or give us direction to demolish it.”
