The B-C government has approved major expansion plans for the hospitals in Vernon and Kelowna. Health Minister George Abbott made the announcements in Kelowna Friday morning. The two projects will cost about 200 million dollars with Vernon's accounting for 81 million. The Province will be contributing 120 million, with the remainder coming from the regional hospital districts. The expansion plans include a new diagnostic and treatment building at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. It will be located adjacent to the existing building on the southeast corner of the VJH site. The new building will include an expanded emergency department, outpatient centre, surgical services, intensive and care and central sterilization services. The upgrade to Kelowna General will include a new outpatient hospital in addition to modernizing and quadrupling the size of the emergency department. Construction is expected to start in 2008 with completion targeted for 2010. The two projects will be developed under a single project management structure.
