Christmas without snow; Halloween without candy; Canada Day without fireworks. There is a melancholic feeling that leaves a sense of emptiness even at the contemplation of the above scenarios. However, it appears Vernon residents will have to find another way of celebrating Canada Day this year as the city has announced there will be no fireworks show to accompany the national holiday. “There won‘t be any fireworks this year,” said Mayor Wayne Lippert, “We, weren‘t able to secure anyone to set them off. The committee there didn‘t get on it soon enough to be able to line someone up.” The lack of fireworks – usually shot from the hill above the army camp – will be a disappointment for Funtastic. “We found out at our last meeting on Tuesday that there would be no fireworks,” said Cindy Masters, one of the slo-pitch tournament‘s chief organizers. “The Funtastic board had committed funds for the fireworks and left the organization up to the city,” said Masters. Masters said the announcement that the city was unable to organize the fireworks came too close to Canada Day for Funtastic organizers to do anything. “If the Funtastic board had heard about this sooner then we could have spear-headed a committee that could have organized it. It‘s been an awesome accessory to Funtastic and will be missed,” said Masters.
According to Lippert, the bungle is the result of poor communication. “There was some miscommunication there,” said Lippert, explaining that the Canada Day committee only looks after events at Polson Park. Masters said that those attending Funtastic will have a good time regardless of the lack of fireworks. “People attending Funtastic are going to have a fabulous time. We‘ve got so much entertainment lined up it would be tough not to,” said Masters. Masters said the fireworks would probably be missed the most by city residents not planning to attend Funtastic. “There are going to be lots and lots of disappointed people. I don‘t know who was in charge or how the ball got dropped but it definitely got dropped,” said Masters. Lippert said the money that would have been used on fireworks this year will go towards “(putting) on a bigger show next year.”
