They are expecting a few electronic bumps, but the Town of Osoyoos is on the road to becoming an, almost, paperless council. Town Chief Administrative Officer, Helen Koning, says councilllors are planning to start using their laptops at council meetings on Monday. “We are going to start easing into the idea of being paperless at council meetings. At our meeting on Monday, councillors and the mayor will be using their laptops instead of hard copies of documents,” says Koning. She says the laptops will eventually save the town money. “The laptops cost about $7,500, which is about how much all our paper copies of meeting documents cost last year. So the first year we expect to break even and could start seeing some savings by the second year,” says Koning. She estimates the town uses about 120,000 sheets of paper each year for documents such as bylaws and meeting agendas. “The full package agendas will still be available in full online to the public, but will no longer be printed out for them at meetings. The mini agenda, which is just two or three pages, will be,” says Koning. She says most of the town councillors are pretty computer savvy, so the adjustment period from paper to screen shouldn’t be too hard.
