Pilots thrill on Father’s Day

As the skies threatened rain, organizers crossed their fingers that the weather would hold out for the 3rd Annual Father‘s Day Air Show. Fortunately it was jaws –not rain– that dropped as pilots dove and swooped through the sky, leaving spectators awestruck at their abilities. “The turn out has been great, the weather has held out, this has been a great show,” said Grahame Go, airport manager. Many in the crowd went one step further, calling this year‘s incarnation of the air show the best one yet. “We came a couple of years ago and this year it‘s much bigger and better. There is definitely a lot more people,” said Kelly Meyer, who was one of many dads enjoying Father‘s Day at the show with his sons. “The planes with the smoke,” were Evan Meyer‘s favourite. Evan said it was a good way to spend Father‘s day and coincidentally, his 11th birthday. Old time big band music, from the era when many of the planes on display were brand new, was blasted through the airport speakers as the announcer described the maneuvers that the pilots were performing for the masses. Spectators saw everything from a helicopter rappelling demonstration to a stimulated strafing run by a Korean War era Chinese-built fighter. Planes and vintage cars were also on display near the hangars and it was this mix of car and plane that drew the biggest crowd up to the barrier near the tarmac. Mayor Wayne Lippert laid down some rubber in a race between his 1969 Mustang (429 cubic inch, 725 horsepower) and Peter Herzig‘s 1950 U.S. Navy T-28 (1425 horsepower) but was ultimately unsuccessful as the big plane won “by a propeller” according to Herzig. “I was surprised how fast (Lippert) was. He was under my wing at the finish so I couldn‘t tell who won. I think I won by a nose but the mayor is saying that he won by a fender,” said Herzig. “That was a lot of fun, I think it was a pretty good run,” said Lippert, who said he hit the engine‘s governor which was set at 210 km/h.
