REGINA (CP) - Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert says he's told the provincial Justice Department to pursue legal action against the federal government over equalization. Calvert says the legal challenge the province mounts will be constitutional in nature because equalization is part of the Constitution. Saskatchewan will argue that it is being treated unfairly by the program and is being singled out among the provinces. Calvert is upset that the federal Conservatives promised to remove non-renewable resource revenues from the equalization formula during the last election, but ended up capping the amount a province can receive under the program. The premiers of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador have also accused the Harper government of breaking its promise on equalization. The Saskatchewan premier has asked government lawyers to advise him on the best way to proceed through the courts and is expecting an answer back within a week.
