Swan Lake residents look to Spallumcheen

With the five North Okanagan electoral areas considering various options for a new governance structure, Spallumcheen Mayor Will Hansma said he has heard from numerous Area B residents who hope to join the township. Hansma said a large number of residents from the neighbouring BX-Swan Lake electoral area had called him recently, expressing concern about the future of their community. “They feel the rural community in which they live would be better associated with the Township of Spallucheen rather than the City of Vernon or another urban area.” A report that will recommend a new structure is in the works. That prompted Coun. Carolyn Farris to propose a special meeting with electoral area representatives to gain information on the plan. However, Coun. Lorna Bissell – who represents Spallumcheen on the North Okanagan Regional District – said a meeting would be most productive after the report was finished. Her voice was an isolated one, however, and council will try to arrange a meeting within three months with electoral area directors.
