Vernon council wants to hear from residents first before possibly charting a new course for an Okanagan Landing neighbourhood. Council had a brief debate Monday about Cummins Road but opted not to take action until after a public information meeting Thursday and a pubic hearing June 25. "We want to make sure we collect all of the comment sheets (at the information session) and present it as evidence at the public hearing," said planner Dale Rintoul. Recently, council gave two readings to an official community plan amendment that would see the former Lakers Golf site redesignated from residential and parks to tourist commercial. Another bylaw would see zoning shift from parks to tourist commercial and four-plex residential. Many residents have expressed concern that extending the dead-end Cummins Road will create traffic problems and they worry that allowing the Elks Lodge to move into the clubhouse will create noise and traffic issues. Coun. Pat Cochrane has met with the residents and he insists there are alternatives to extending Cummins Road to Lakeshore Road. One of the options is to create a new road along Marshall Fields that would avoid Cummins and connect to Lakeshore Road.
"It goes through existing playing fields at Marshall Fields. It also results in less wetland area, said "Rintoul of the plan. Leon Gous, chief administrative officer, added that while keeping Cummins Road as a dead-end would benefit that neighbourhood, it could negatively impact the community. "Cummins is quite important in terms of circulation. You have to look at it from overall (traffic) flow." The matter will come back before council in July. The public information meeting runs Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paddlewheel Park Hall.
