Bring your dad because there‘s fun to be had as a plethora of events will make this Father‘s Day weekend one of the busiest of the year. With the Sunshine Festival, air show, stock car races, fishing derby and longboard racing all competing for attention, Vernon residents have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to weekend activities. “Usually we‘re gearing up for the Canada Day weekend but this weekend is really packed with things to do,” said Linda Bernhardt, manager of the Vernon Tourism office. The weekend will begin on Saturday as Davison Orchards will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Pancakes will be slathered with apple cider syrup on Sunday as well, as the orchard serves up a Father‘s Day feast. After allowing some time to digest, families can make their way to the downtown area and soak up the Sunshine Festival on Saturday. There will be plenty to see and do as the main stage will feature live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who feel that their property taxes are too high or their last speeding ticket was undeserved will have a chance to get a little payback as Mayor Wayne Lippert and RCMP Insp. Steve McVarnock have agreed to act as dunk tank fodder.
Saturday activities should be used as a warm up for Sunday, when the First Annual Father‘s Day Fishing Derby at Paddlewheel park begins at 11 a.m. The target fish for the day are carp and squawfish, two invasive species responsible for damaging the ecology of the lake. Dads can get their kids to show them how to navigate to www.bcfamilyfishing.com where weekend fishing licenses can be obtained for free. If the tranquility of the lake gets to be too overwhelming then paternal figures and their companions for the day can get a taste of high speed action at the Father‘s Day Western Canadian Super Series at Sun Valley Speedway. The race will be the first time that Nascar Street Stock racing will be held in Western Canada. “We‘ve got the best speedway oval in Canada we‘ve been told; that‘s why we‘ve got the NASCAR,” said Gale Jackson, with the Sun Valley Speedway. Qualifying events are at 1 p.m. and the races start at 2 p.m. However, if it is the wild blue yonder that interests fathers, then perhaps the Vernon Airshow will be more appealing. The show starts at 10 a.m. and will feature static displays and demonstrations of spectacular vintage and modern aircraft. If even this is too tame for an “Xtreme Dad”, his adrenaline addiction is guaranteed to be satisfied by the Vernon DH 2007 longboarding race. The event is held on Middleton Mountain and takes place over Saturday (noon) and Sunday (10 a.m.). Riders use good old gravity to reach speeds of up to 70km/h as they wind down the course. “There‘s something for all interests and wallet sizes,” said Bernhardt, “If you can‘t find something to do this weekend then . . .”
