Debate Over Curling Funding .(Pete McIntyre)
The city of Vernon's 'financial watchdog' is questioning the amount of public money being sought by an upcoming sporting event. The 2008 Ford World Women's curling event is seeking a 60-thousand dollar grant from Greater Vernon Services, plus 'services in kind'. Director Barry Beardsell called the amount 'ridiculous.' 'Well I think its quite a burden on Greater Vernon Services. As you heard, the previous support, when it was for the skiing, that was basically out of NORD.' GVS staff is preparing a report on the request, but the curling organizers will also be encouraged to make a presentation to the regional district.

Rec Fees To Increase .(Pete McIntyre)
Fees will be going up to use parks and rec facilities in Greater Vernon, but one local politician feels the increases should be steeper. GVSC directors have approved three percent increases for activities like swimming at the rec centre pool, or renting ice time. The hikes are needed to cover cost of living increases to wages and utilities. Director Barry Beardsell feels increases in the range of five to ten percent, should have been considered. 'So its not subsidized as much by the taxpayer and it leaves, in effect, more money to create the facilities that we're are so shy on.' Beardsell says if companies like Shaw can hike their cable TV rates ten percent, local government should be able to justify larger increases
