For the first time in almost six years, management of Greater Vernon’s arenas is back in public hands. The Greater Vernon Services Committee voted Thursday to directly operate the Multiplex, the Civic Arena and the Priest Valley Arena Jan. 1. Gary Corner, board chairman, anticipates this move will provide his board for more control than existed under the private contractor that oversaw the facilities since 2001. “Recreation Excellence did a good job but this system will be more active,” he said. “We don’t have to worry about a contract and what’s in it.”
GVSC notified Recreation Excellence back in February that its contract would come to an end Dec. 31, half way through the upcoming ice season.
“We thought about extending the contract (until the end of the 2007/08 season) but those talks broke down,” said Corner. “It’s not an ideal time for a change but there will be a smooth transition.” With its decision made, GVSC is now looking at hiring a general manager as well as filling other key positions. He isn’t sure if some of Recreation Excellence’s staff will move over to GVSC. “It will be up to them to apply for a position,” he said. It’s possible that some activities may be contracted out such as janitorial. “We’re not sure about the concession. That’s a work in progress,” said Corner. The only opposition to shifting operation styles came from director Stan Field. “I don’t believe those facilities can be operated cost-effectively by local government,” he said. “We were getting a good service provided by Recreation Excellence and there was no need to change.” Recreation Excellence is not commenting about GVSC’s actions. “We don’t know any details about it yet and we will probably issue a release in a week,” said Brad Steele, facilities manager.
