Regulations hurt tournament

The organizer of a major slowpitch tournament over the past weekend is crying foul about the lack of a beer gardens. With the Department of National Defense turning down his application for a beer garden at the Army Camp, where the tournament was being held, organizer Bob Bishop said he was left with no way to help finance the tournament, which took place this past weekend. “When I don’t have a beer garden, I don’t have any way to pay the bills.” Wayne Emde, public information officer for the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre, said there is a policy prohibiting beer gardens while the cadets are on base. And that policy, he said, stems from “the fact there are cadets on the ground, there are other people’s children in the area. “Those are the rules.”

Bishop said worries about a beer garden are unfounded. “We have never had an incident,” he said. “It’s zero tolerance, having alcohol out of the beer gardens.” Bishop added that, if anything, a beer garden allows tournament volunteers to control the consumption of liquor. “I think the biggest problem is, people have to realize the difference between slowpitch national events and Funtastic.” Whereas Funtastic is likened to a huge party, Bishop said many of the teams attending the Nationals had shelled out tens of thousands of dollars to take part. With winning paramount, Bishop said teams don’t want to risk expulsion. However the beverage gardens are a crucial source of income for the tournaments. “We don’t sell a lot of beer but we sell enough to pay the bills.”
