Surrey just the latest city to cut a labour deal

Vancouver SunPublished: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 Canada.com

The City of Surrey reached a tentative agreement with its workers late Tuesday, making it the fourth area municipality to settle as the strike in Vancouver continued to heat up. CUPE Local 402 president Laurie Larsen would not divulge details of the detail with Surrey until it's ratified, saying it was comparable to -- but "not a mirror image of" -- deals with Richmond, Burnaby and Delta, all of which include a 17.5-per-cent wage hike over five years. Larsen said the union, which represents 1,700 inside and outside workers, parks and recreation employees and RCMP support staff, has been bargaining with the city steadily since September without the GVRD Labour Relations Bureau.
