Airport expansion proceeds

Kamloops Airport officials will meet with local First Nations bands Monday to seek their input before the runway is expanded and the terminal building upgraded. Consulting the Kamloops and Skeetchestn Indian bands prior to the beginning of construction is part of an archeological assessment of the construction area, said airport manager Fred Legace, as is the completion of an environmental impact study. A first draft of the latter has been submitted to the province and returned with some revisions, Legace said. According to an initial draft plan of the airport expansion project, all work, including the runway, terminal building and navigation aides, could be completed as early as May 2009 for an estimated $20 million. Legace said the impact on airport users will be kept to a minimum, noting construction at airports is common. He said work on the front entrances at the arrival and departure side has reached the halfway point. Following a federal funding injection of $6.6 million this summer, money to complete the airport expansion is now in place. Victoria has already contributed $4 million and the remaining money will be paid for by airport users, who now have to pay an airport improvement fee.
