Auditorium toilets get facelift

The new washrooms at the Vernon Recreation Centre will be pretty, but to others they‘re just plain pricey. Vernon‘s recreation centre is in the middle of getting four new bathrooms after the city approved a building permit to renovate them at a cost of nearly $150,000. A construction crew has just finished gutting the two washrooms in the auditorium and within a few weeks work will be underway in the hallway bathrooms. Doug Ross, manager of recreation services,” said at 40-years-old, the bathrooms‘ time had come. “They were circa 1966, so it was time. Things were certainly looking dated.”

An update may have been necessary, but Coun. Barry Beardsell said the price of the project is steep. “How do you manage to spend that kind of money on bathrooms?” he said. In defence of the costs, Ross said the washrooms are getting complete overhauls that will make them more efficient and environmentally friendly. Included in the renovations are high-efficiency lighting and low-flow toilets with sensors. The toilets used to come up from the ground, but now they‘ll come down from the ceiling, allowing staff to clean the area more easily. The Dogwood hallway washrooms are also being enlarged so both washrooms have room for a handicap stall, rather than just the men‘s. Ross said the new bathrooms will also have new flooring and stainless steel sinks, evoking the kind of lavatory look you would see in a convention centre. The auditorium washrooms are expected to be finished by Sept. 19 in time for the quilting show being hosted at the centre on Sept. 20.
