Coldstream Rejects Sports Complex

(Pete McIntyre) http://www.1075kiss.com/

In the end, agriculture won out over new sports fields. After hearing public input for two and a half hours, Coldstream council voted 4 - 3 against a proposal for a sports complex on farm land along Aberdeen Road. Councillors Garlick, Firman, Dirk and Malerby were on the 'No' side, mostly for wanting to preserve farm land and the community's rural lifestyle. Mayor Gary Corner, who is also the G-V-S chairman, voted in favour along with Councillors Taylor and Williams.

About 450 people came out to the meeting at Coldstream school, and of the 47 peple who made comments, 58 percent backed the sports fields. Meantime, council did unanimously support using 16 acres of the site for a section of the Grey Canal Trail. That will be forwarded to the Agricultural Land Commission for consideration.

Coldstream Council has voted against submitting an application to the agricultural land commission to change farm land into a sports complex. Around 4 hundred and 50 people turned out last night for the public meeting. Andy Danyliu with the Coldstream Ratepayers association says, the decision will allow future generations to eat locally grown food. The vote was 4 to 3. Councillor Carole Williams, Glenn Taylor and Mayor Gary Corner all voted to send the application to the ALR commission. Council later voted against sending the issue to a Coldstream referendum.

Vernon's Funtastic director Rick Dubois says, although supporters of the complex are disappointed he hopes they've gained more supporters through this process. Dubois says they heard there's a need for sports fields so maybe those opposed to putting a complex on Aberdeen Road, will help find a new location.
