Groups share views over sports complex

With plans for a proposed sports complex in Coldstream dominating debate, two organizations are hoping to drive public opinion. On Thursday, the Outdoor Sports User Group will hold an information session at the indoor soccer facility at Marshall Fields from 4 to 7 p.m., while the Coldstream Ratepayers Association is hosting a town hall meeting at Kidston Elementary School at 7 p.m. “We want to talk to people one-on-one and show them that Marshall Fields is at capacity,” said Bill Tarr, OSUG spokesman. “The sports groups will talk about the needs and what the current conditions (of sports facilities) are.” OSUG consists of a variety of groups including soccer, slowpitch, fastball, rugby, football, track and field and dog agility.Tarr says current sports facilities in Greater Vernon are inadequate for the current needs of sports participants, and the Coldstream site would address that issue. He hopes the public will attend the information session. “We want people to form their own opinion,” said Tarr.

The Coldstream Ratepayers Association is convinced the proposed complex does not conform to good planning, will be a financial burden on taxpayers and will destroy prime farm land. “We want to give people the facts behind the proposal,” said president Andy Danyliu.“People thought they were just getting playing fields and not a mega stadium. What’s driving this is economic considerations to draw major events.” Danyliu added that existing facilities such as Marshall Fields and DND can meet the needs of local sports groups. Danyliu is anticipating a good turnout for the town hall meeting. “I’m hoping people will express their opinions. We want to listen. If people feel this is a wise choice, then that is what council will do.” Coldstream council will hold a public meeting about the proposed sports complex Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Coldstream Elementary.
