The Okanagan Regional Library Board still supports a new library in Vernon., if and when the city decided to move ahead with the project. At the board's meeting Wednesday, members voted in favor of extending the term of their memorandum of understanding with the City of Vernon to Dec. 31, 2007. The document outlines terms or sharing costs, hiring an architect and determining a location. Executive director of the board Leslie Dieno said they’d like to see the project move forward. “We’re not backing out of the project, but we’re waiting to see what Vernon council will do because we’re not sure what process council would want to follow.” The last few weeks have been an exercise in tag for the fate of the library, as city council waited for a decision from the library board while the library board awaits the city’s future plans. “I think they’re (board members) willing to wait to see if Vernon wants to go forward and if they are going forward, how they would do that,”said Dieno. She said the board still believes Vernon needs a larger library, the current location is ideal and is willing to spend $9 million towards the project. “They still like the project very much,” said Dieno. The city has been two-stepping around which direction to take with the library after residents opposed council borrowing $20 million for the project and halted an alternative approval process with a petition. Council is expected to discuss the library/ civic complex at a future meeting.
