The city of Vernon and its unionized workforce are closing in on a new labour contract. The city and CUPE Local 626 have announced a tentative deal covering 184 full and part time employees. Mayor Wayne Lippert says negotiations have been going on for several months. A ratification vote will be held at the Vernon Recreation Complex on Wednesday. Details of the deal will be released following ratification. A union rep did not return our call but in a news release, the union says a willingness to address the main issues and a positive approach, have been the keys to the successful negotiations. City administrator Leon Gous credits a good working relationship with the union as being crucial.

Don Quixote Note from July 11:
Anyone else wonder why the media hasn't reported on the status of the City of Vernon's Contract with THE VERNON CIVIC EMPLOYEES’ UNION LOCAL 626 that expired on Dec. 31, 2006. Current employment opportunities on the City's website are advertising the rates from this expired contract so maybe it was simply extended? Hopefully any wage and benefits adjustments have been conservatively provided for in this years budget?

AUGUST 21, 2007 11:34 AM First retiree association founded in Vernon, BC
CUPE history was made in British Columbia last week when – for the first time – a charter was issued to a local to establish of a retired members association. CUPE 626 considered it an honour to receive the first charter and mounted it on the wall with their other charters, some dating back to 1948. The CUPE Constitution has long allowed for the possibility of RMAs, but this is the first local to actually organize one. CUPE encourages others to follow this example in recognizing their retirees and keeping them active. Local 626 represents the City of Vernon, District of Coldstream, Vernon Golf & Country Club and the North Okanagan Regional District recycling depot.
