History of Vernon Casino

1987 Vernon Casino opened.
The formation of the British Columbia Gaming Commission (1987) and the restructuring of the basic regulatory framework for casino gaming. These new regulations allowed for the establishment of permanent casino locations and adoption of GCC's unique policy that guaranteed no loss to the charity. The regulations also drew upon GCC's internal system of controls and paperwork for casino gaming.

In March 1997, the Province of British Columbia announced the expansion of gaming in the province. This included: an increase in the hours of operation from 8 to 14, the allowance of new table games such as Mini Baccarat, and the introduction of slot machine gaming. Both the hours of operation and new table games initiatives were instituted on June 1, 1997. By late October, the Newton Casino became the BC pilot casino in the operation of slot machines.

In response to judicial decisions, the Province, in the spring of 1998, announced that all charity-designated casinos would be switched to regulatory controlled government managed facilities. This meant that the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, as an agent of government, would be taking managerial control of the casinos. This change took place province-wide on June 1, 1998.

correct me if I'm wrong, math skills aren't my forte, but my handheld calculator says that 1% of the casino slot revenue comes up to $200,000 and change--which would very nicely fund the community drop-in/homeless shelter 24/7 365 without asking the good people of Vernon to dig any deeper, and let BC housing off the hook ... so why do we still have people sleeping in the streets? Can somebody please explain to the demi gods of Victoria that give and take does not need to mean them taking and us giving.

Your calculations are spot on and these are just for the year 2000. The 2007 slot machine take in 2007 fiscal in Vernon was up to $27,109,534 without table revenue of $1,430,000 being considered.

Full figures for casinos across B.C. posted at July 14 article Saturday, July 14, 2007 titled
"Casino, bingo hall ran up $60.5 million in revenue (PRINCE GEORGE) (Only $30.4 million in Vernon) "
