B-C's new meat inspection regulations took effect yesterday, despite a 12-th hour appeal from some North Okanagan politicians. NORD chairman Jerry Oglow says he and rural Lumby director Rick Fairbairn met with Agriculture minister Pat Bell at last week's UBCM conference. 'The minister was very frank with our board and has indicated, in no uncertain terms, that he is not prepared to extend the transition period. He's done it once already, for 13 months and he's not prepared to do it a second time. However, Oglow says minister Bell did provide some positive information. Bell says several slaughter-houses are in the process of getting licensed, which may provide service to some local small producers.
