Governance Review Takes First Step

The first meeting of the Okanagan governance committee was held in Kelowna Friday.Kelowna politician and CORD chair Robert Hobson was chosen to chair the nine member committee than includes Jerry Oglow, Stan Field and Wayne Lippert from NORD.Hobson says issues such as climate change, the environment, emergency services and valley-wide planning and growth management were identified as issues to study for inter-regional governance.Hobson says combining the three regional district into one will also be a future topic of discussion.The study will also include input from governments, First Nations and the public, and a communications plan.The group will meet again on November 26-th in Kelowna, with future meetings scheduled for the North and South Okanagan. While Friday's meeting was in-camera, the committee voted to make future meetings open to the public.

Today's first meeting between the nine representatives chosen to review governance in the Okanagan was successful according to NORD's Jerry Oglow. Oglow was chosen to be vice chair of the committee, while the Central Okangan Regional District's Robert Hobson will be Chair. Oglow says, the committee wants to involve the public in every step of the review."One of the first things we've resolved was that all our meetings will be public"The committee will meet again on November 26th to finalize a public consultation plan. Meetings are planned in Penticton and Vernon as well.
