Lake City Casino has received the green light to move into a larger facility with more slot machines and entertainment. In a 4-3 vote, Vernon City Council has given its support to the relocation. Mayor Wayne Lippert cast the deciding vote in favour. He says part of it was ensuring the facility stays in Vernon. “It didn’t come forward from the casino, but there were indications from other communities outside our boundaries that were interested in getting the casino and those funds,” says Lippert.
The city currently gets 10% of the casino's profits, and, under a new program, will use $50,000 of that to help problem gamblers. Councillors Beardsell, Cunningham and Baumbrough voted against the relocation. The new facility should open next fall.
