Coldstream to Vote on ALR use for new Sports Complex ! "IF you don't vote don't bitch."

I think Will Hansma of Spall got it right when he said why have a non binding referendum to decide whether land should be excluded from the ALR for a possible sports complex. It should have been referred to the ALR Experts and if they decided that they would approve such a permanent exclusion it could have gone to a binding referendum of Coldstream residents for approval.

Aside from the cost and pitting neighbour against neighbour imagine the day after if the Council is confronted with a narrow 53-47 negative vote (or vice-versa affirmative margin) with a less than 60% turnout. Will enough Councillors defy their voters and put their collective gonads or ovaries on the line and forge ahead. (Sorry blogreaders, couldn't resist metaphor)

Our local councils seem to misunderstand the use of counter petitions when referendums are needed and in this case where non binding referendums are used instead of non prejudicial references to the ALR and other more expert bodies.

Good luck Coldstream. No matter who you agree with go out and vote.
"IF you don't vote don't bitch."

After all only a Councillor who wishes to become an political eunuch or odalisque can discard your vote and substitute his more learned opinion for yours.
