The City of Vernon is preparing to sell the concept of a new civic complex. Residents will soon get information about the proposed library/office building leading up to the Jan. 26 referendum. “The story boards for the referendum will be completed by the end of this week,” said Leon Gous, chief administrative officer. “They will be available on the city’s Web site and there will be static displays around the community.” Residents are being asked to approve borrowing up to $30 million over 25 years for construction of a civic building. There will also be four or five formal open houses. But Coun. Barry Beardsell is questioning the scope of the details the city will actually provide to residents. “When can the public expect all of the pertinent information?” he said.“What will the city receive for the sale of the existing library and the true cost of parking? There is so little information out right now.”
However, Gous says city staff and consultants are working hard to ensure that as much information as possible is available before voters head off to the polls. As an example, he said there will be a financial break-down for the average home if borrowing is approved Jan. 26. “As for space allocation for the partners, we are trying to fix it the best we can.” The proposed building would include a 30,000-square-foot library, as well as offices for city workers and the RCMP, as well as possibly a new art gallery.
