Sleeping with a shotgun

2007-12-04 08:26:57 File #Vernon/North Okanagan 2007-32625

On December 2, 2007, Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP attended at the Sigalet Motors building located on 32nd Street after receiving information that a male in that area was believed to be in possession of a handgun. While checking residents at this location, a second male was located and found to be in possession of a sawed off shotgun. The shotgun was under a blanket with him while he was sleeping. The 22 year old Armstrong male was arrested immediately for Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace. Upon his arrest, two shotgun shells were also found in his possession. He was transported to Vernon Detachment and was scheduled to appear in court yesterday (December 3rd) on six related firearms charges. This male is known to police and has been staying in Vernon as having no fixed address. While at the scene, RCMP members also seized a replica hand gun. In addition, one member was bitten by a dog that is being kept on site. The member was bitten on the hand with minor injuries. The members in Vernon, as well as several local business owners, are increasingly concerned with the gathering of folks in this particular area. Members are conducting routine patrols in this area in light of
the recent cold weather and an increase in the number of people seeking shelter. The RCMP have confirmed that there are beds available at the local women's and men's shelters. The Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP will be extra diligent in working with the owner in securing this site.
