World class skiing in Vernon is getting a boost.

by Rachael Kimola - Castanet

Okanagan-Vernon MLA, Tom Christensen, says Vernon will receive $10,000 from Hosting B.C. to help it host the FIS NorAm Cross Country Competition on December 1 and 2. "Vernon is home to world class skiing and I'm happy to see an opportunity for our city to be showcased on a national level. The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games are fast approaching and the FIS NorAm Cross Country Competition is a great way for this community to come together and celebrate winter sports in B.C.," says Christensen. He says the funding is part of more than $350,000 which has been awarded to 16 communities to help them bid for or host national and international sporting events. “To date, the Hosting BC program has invested more than $2 million in communities all around B.C.” This round of Hosting B.C. funding grants supports a range of 22 different sports including soccer, swimming, wheelchair tennis, Alpine skiing, snowboarding and biathlon.
