The Westbank Yacht Club will be exempt from paying municipal taxes --- at least for now. Westside Municipal Council voted Tuesday to pass the Tax Exempt Bylaw as it was presented. The bylaw exempts 15 places of worship and seven non-profit lands, including the Westbank Yacht Club, from paying municipal taxes. Council did however put the club on notice, saying the exemption is only for 2008. The exemption means the club does not have to pay municipal taxes, in the neighbourhood of $15,000, of which the municipal share is about $6,200. The issue came up two weeks ago when the bylaw was initially introduced. Mayor Rosalind Neis asked at the time why the club enjoyed tax exempt status. Yacht Club Commodore, Yvonne Crawford spoke before Council, explaining that the club is a non-profit organization, giving back a great deal to the community. She says the club has enjoyed tax exempt status since its inception in 1965.
