Former Mayor Sentenced To Jail 107.5 KISSFM By Pete McIntyre

A former mayor of Vernon was led out of the courthouse Tuesday in handcuffs. Sean Harvey was sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of fraud and one of forgery. The charges related to dealings Harvey had with a former business partner, Chris Laidlaw, between 2003 and 2005. Provincial court judge Ellen Burdett ruled out a conditional sentence, calling the offences a well executed scheme, a significant breach of trust, and motivated by greed. Just prior to sentencing, the 38 year old Harvey called the crimes reprehensible and said he was looking forward to paying his debt to society, and getting on with his life. His father Fred Harvey, told the media afterwards, justice had to be done, but he felt the judge could have gone easier on the sentence. "The fact that he has made an effort to become a good citizen. I think that's a value and I was hoping that would have more impact but I have to abide by the system."Harvey was also ordered to pay $44,000 restitution. The former mayor who has been working at a Salmon Arm construction and development business, winked and smiled at his father in the courtroom, as he was led away by a sheriff. Fred Harvey said that was his son's way of saying 'Thanks Dad for standing beside me'(through his ordeal).

Defence lawyer Ian McTavish won't rule out an appeal, adding he expected a lesser sentence. Harvey stepped down as the city's mayor in 2005 after using a city credit card for $13, 000 in personal expenses. He was given a one year conditional sentence for breach of trust, and spent a week in jail for breaching terms of the sentence.Court records indicate he has $3,780 left to pay back to the city for that offence.
