Health Minister to Meet on VJH Funding

By Pete McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM

Vernon city council members have been granted a meeting with B-C's Health Minister. George Abbott will meet with the elected reps on Friday to talk about funding for Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Councillor Barry Beardsell says the main concern is that V-J-H is getting less government support than other regional hospitals."We're getting less funding, we have less (acute care) beds, which relates to the funding as well, and we have less equipment."The concerns were raised by local doctors in a 25 page report to city council last month.

Don Quixote Note: No indications on time or location of this meeting yet. Will it be an open public meeting or are we heading to the Darkside again?

More on the subject of hospital financing and why the local taxpayers pay 40% of the capital costs of new hospitals while the lower mainland pays 0% (not a typo) can be found at:

Perhaps Council who supported a resolution to UBCM will remember to raise this with the Minister at this meeting:

B154 HOSPITAL CAPITAL COST FINANCING : THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Provincial Government assume 100% responsibility of capital hospital expenditures for all municipalities in British Columbia and eliminate the hospital property tax imposed on taxpayers outside the Greater Vancouver Regional District area.
