NORD committees stay put

By Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star - February 10, 2008

There won’t be any changes to how North Okanagan Regional District committees operate. The electoral area directors put forward a plan Wednesday that would have seen many committees eliminated, but that didn’t get support from chairman Jerry Oglow. “Committees allow for focused debate on issues,” he said. “They provide another opportunity for the public to come and speak.” As part of their plan, the electoral area directors recommended that all committees that deal with regional or corporate matters be scrapped, such as finance and growth management. They would have been dealt with by the full board. “We felt it would bring the full board together. We want it back to the way it was so everyone is involved,” said Herman Halvorson, rural Enderby director. Halvorson believes that having various committees has become inefficient and increases the workload of directors and staff. “There’s lots of times where there’s duplications because you will have a committee meeting and then it goes to the board. You can get the same report three times,” he said. That is also a concern for Rick Fairbairn, rural Lumby director. Halvorson isn’t upset that Oglow is not accepting the recommendations.“That’s his call as the chairman. He can organize committees as he sees fit,” said Halvorson. Oglow says he was pleased that the electoral directors took the time to look at how the regional district operates. “I appreciate the constructive way in which it’s been put forward. Some good thought has been put into it,” he said.
