VERNON, B.C. - An international team of law enforcement officials have charged two B.C. residents after 11 people were swindled out of $400,000 in a vintage car scam. In the scam, vintage cars were advertised on Internet auction sites and once potential buyers wired the sellers money, they never delivered the cars. A Vernon man and woman, both 31, are facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000. They have been arrested and transported to Calgary, where the complaints originated, to face the charges.

RCMP in the Okanagan have been instrumental in dismantling an international fraud ring involving the sale of vintage cars. Police say the nine month investigation has led to the arrest of two Okanagan residents -- one in Kelowna, the other in Vernon. The suspects, including a woman, have been transported to Calgary where they face charges of fraud over $5,000. Police are looking for a third suspect. "In perpetrating the fraud, the suspects advertised vintage cars on various Internet auction sites. The suspects engaged the victims in a series of e-mails and phone calls to arrange for the purchase of the vehicles. The victims then wired funds to the suspects and never received the vehicles." The investigation involved various police forces across the globe including the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and the Swedish National Police. Officials say the fraud ring was responsible for defrauding 11 victims of more than $400,000. The names of the accused have not been released.
