Three days after denying it was closing, Sitel is making it official --- the Kelowna call centre will be closing in August. On Friday, a news release was sent to Castanet and other media outlets, indicating the Kelowna operation would be closing August 5. The release was attributed to Murray Trepel, Kelowna Sitel site director, who indicated later in the day he had no knowledge of the closure and did not send the release. In a brief company statement Monday, Trepel says the decision to close the Kelowna site did not come easily. "The closure is due to the changing business needs of our client and is in no way reflective of the quality of customer care provided by our Kelowna associates," says Trepel. "We encourage our Kelowna associates to explore employment opportunities at our other offices in Canada." The closure will affect approximately 160 workers. In February, 2007, Sitel announced it was laying off 210 workers after it was unable to find enough employees to support its client, Capital One. The company re-opened a few months later when a new client, Roger's Wireless, was found. Monday's announcement indicated Sitel is working with other businesses and government agencies in the area to assist these individuals in finding new employment.
