Gag award

Powell River Peak June 12

A Vancouver-based organization nominated the City of Powell River for its Golden Gag award. The Seriously Free Speech Committee nominated the city for sending letters threatening legal action to three residents for comments they made criticizing the city. However, the Golden Gag Award went to CanWest MediaWorks, which sued a retired Douglas College instructor and a printer in connection with a parody of the Vancouver Sun that lampooned the paper's coverage of the Middle East.
