Liberal candidate steps down

107.5 KISSFM Pete McIntyre

There's been a surprise resignation by a local federal election candidate. Buffy Baumbrough has stepped down as the Okanagan Shuswap Liberal candidate. Baumbrough says there were several reasons for her decision including the uncertainty over the timing of the next federal election, her strong interest in local government issues like the environment, and her hands on involvement with the expansion of her family's business. "She tells KISS FM, "At the conference I attended on sustainability at the end of May in Victoria, there was a very strong message that change needs to occur at the local level, so that was a big part of my decision making, that we can affect change at the local level." The first term city councillor says there's a strong possibility she will seek re-election to Vernon council this November. She says her decision had nothing against the Liberal party. "My belief in Liberal values and in Stephane Dion has not wavered. This was very much a personal decision."Okanagan Shuswap Liberal Association president Janna Francis says they regret but understand Baumbrough's decision, and will hold a nomination meeting as soon as possible.

Don Quixote Note: Early this Month when Coun. Gilroy announced that he would run for Council in the fall joining Dean Skoreyko as the two announced candidates for Council I posted:

"There have been rumours that one or more of the present Council would challenge for the Mayor's position. Now that Coun. Gilroy has announced that he is running for Councillor and Coun. Baumbrough is occupied with federal Politics, there are only four (4) more potential inside opponents for incumbent Mayor Wayne Lippert to worry about."

In view of this decision by Coun. Baumbrough to give up the Liberal Nomination and her run for M.P. I now have to revise my posting to read that there are now (5) potential inside opponents for the Mayor to contemplate running against in the fall.
