Port Coquitlam mayor drunk and off meds on night of assault: lawyer

CBC News

The lawyer representing Scott Young said Thursday that the Port Coquitlam mayor was drunk and had stopped taking his anti-depressant medication the night he assaulted his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.Defence lawyer Richard Peck said the circumstances do not excuse Young's behaviour, but asked the judge at the mayor's sentencing hearing in Port Coquitlam to consider his action in that context.

Peck asked the judge to give Young a nine-month conditional sentence and six months probation, and to waive community service as a condition of sentencing because of Young's service as mayor. Mayors in B.C. are underpaid, said Peck, and so Young's service as mayor should count as community service. A conditional sentence would mean Young would serve no jail time.Young will be sentenced on July 25. He has refused repeated demands from Port Coquitlam citizens and councillors to resign.
