Roundabout approved for East Hill; Suicide Hill to remain open

Vernon's second roundabout will be installed in lower East Hill. City council voted 3-2 Monday in favour of adding a traffic circle at 32-nd Avenue and Pleasant Valley Road. Mayor Wayne Lippert voted against it. "Yes I did. I don't know if everybody in Vernon is ready for it yet, and I would have supporting keeping the four way stop there." He says the project will go out to tender as soon as possible. Councillor Patrick Nicol was also opposed, saying more residents favoured a traffic light which would have cost about the same. City engineer Rob Dickenson told council, since the first roundabout went in near the Schubert Centre about four years ago, there hasn't been any accidents involving serious injuries. Meantime, council voted unanimously to maintain current vehicle access up Suicide Hill, despite a staff recommendation to close it. A special curb will be added on 30-th Avenue near the turn-off to slow down traffic going up the hill, and to make it safer.
