Betty Selin, Astral Media Radio - Vernon
Complaints are coming in from residents who live near the area of Memory Lane on 25th Avenue in Vernon. They're concerned about needles and drug paraphernalia left in the area. Gord Molendyk, with the Vernon RCMP admits there is more activity in the area with the creation of the red zones. He says everyone you see there is not homeless, but sometimes a lifestyle choice and summer in the Okanagan always sees an increase in the street population. Molendyk says contrary to rumours you may hear, police haven't seen a great influx as people are pushed out of Vancouver in preparation for 2010. He says the safety patrol unit, fire department and by-law are all trained to pick up needles. He doesn't recommend residents pick them up, unless they use tongs or pliers.
