New Compensation Package for Local Council.

At a Darkside Meeting, displaying their financial acumen, the Council accepted the new Political Salaries for Mayor and Council. The mayor will be paid five (5) half Billion dollar Zimbabwe notes each month. Councillors will receive (2) half Billion dollar Zimbabwe notes each month.

The Compensation committee who made the proposed recommendation had originally suggested making the salary scale retroactive to the Councils first day in office. Wiser heads prevailed and that decision was shot down by a narrow 4-3 vote.

The new motto for Vernon Elections will be " Run for Council! Every Councilor a Billionaire !"

A study to decide whether to make staff salaries competitive with these newly accepted Council stipends will be undertaken by a paid consultant who is expected to report back in late December. He will be paid in the lowly Canadian Dollar.

A senior administration spokesman sagely admitted that as most senior staff were locked in by longer term labour contracts that they could not avail themselves of this 'wonderful financial compensation package' and their loss would be the Politicians gain. The union workforce contract still has 2 more years to run and there is little likelihood that this contract would be renegotiated. "C'est la Vie" said a labour spokesman with a twinkle in his eye.

The motion to declassify this highly debated salary adjustment should be made at the next Council meeting. A sister city relationship in Zimbabwe will also be discussed so an international exchange mechanism can be found for all the new Zimbabwean Billionaires in Vernon.

As far as council salaries goes, how do you expect to attract qualified people. If you think of a Vernon Councillor as a vice-president for a multi-million dollare company, at their rate of pay you aren't going to get much! As is proven on an almost daily basis.

I agree
Councillors should be paid at least 70 000 dollars and a Mayor should receive about 140 000 in Vernon

The condition will be that that is their full time job and no other jobs allowed while they serve

In this way council will attract people who might otherwise be unable to give up their day job
The old adage is
You gets what you pays for!!

Just look at the showers we have been getting for years now!!

Perhaps the time has come for a serious debate on council salaries

Having said that a City cannot be thought of in the same terms of reference as a business company because in a 'COMMUNITY' of 'equals' other values are at play as well as the financial ones!
