No support for truck ban plan

By Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM

Big trucks won't be banned on a busy Vernon street as one city councillor wanted. Barry Beardsell failed to get support from his colleagues on a plan to ban big rigs on 27-th Street as a way to get the province to provide more local highways funding. Beardsell's motion failed to get a seconder, meaning it died on the table. He told KISS FM after the meeting, "This council doesn't seem to have the nerve to really stand up to this provincial government. They're not doing anything for this community of sbstance and we are suffering." Even though city staff supported Beardsell's funding claim, and for some kind of short ban, several councillors felt it would be a disaster for traffic. Councillor Jack Gilroy says Beardsell's idea had some merit. "There's a huge frustration on council that the goverment doesn't care about what's happening in the city of Vernon with the roads. We have all these plans in place but nobody comes through with the funding. They just seem to forget about us. If the minister (of Transportation) doesn't come here in the next three council meetings, I could probably support Barry's motion." Council did pass a compromise motion to invite BC's Transportation Minister to an upcoming meeting to discuss the lack of provincial funding.

This council and mayor are as weak as Tom Christensen and do nothing for our community. Look how long we waited for a small percentage grant on our water utility, look at the problems of valley governance, look at the help other communities are receiving, look at the fools when it comes to improvements and more beds for the hospital-get rid of these useless, selfserving politicians
