Port Coquitlam mayor gets conditional sentence

CBC NEWS

Port Coquitlam Mayor Scott Young, who pleaded guilty in May to two counts of assault, was given a 12-month conditional sentence Friday to be served at home with a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. PT. Young's curfew is loosened on nights he needs to attend council meetings. He's also been placed on 18 months of probation and ordered to perform 60 hours of community service and to stay away from his former girlfriend and partner, and avoid alcohol and drugs. Young, who refused to step down as mayor of the Vancouver suburb despite repeated demands for him to quit from the public and from his fellow councillors, pleaded guilty in May to two counts of assault and one count of breaching an undertaking. The charges stem from an incident in April 2007 when Young broke into his ex-girlfriend's garage and assaulted her as well as her new partner.
