I sent the e-mail posted below to all the leaders of the Federal Parties, My M.P. and the Premier of B.C. , the leader of the NDP and my MLA and an update on my responses up to now are:
- M.P. Colin Mayes -July 14 "Thank you for your email to our office. The Carbon Tax is a provincial tax which came into effect on July 1, 2008. We would request that you forward your concerns regarding this tax to your local MLA. If you do not know how to contact your MLA, please provide us with your mailing address and we will forward the information to you." I then replied to Mr. Mayes: "I KNOW the carbon tax is a provincial tax. BUT the GST is a FEDERAL tax and my question is whether my M.P. feels it is fair to impose the GST tax on the Provincial Carbon Tax. I've already sent the same question to my local MLA and the Premier and hopefully will get an answer from them. BUT only the Feds can remove the GST NOT their Provincial Counterparts. Thank you in advance for a real answer to my question." (July 14) (NO ANSWER SINCE)
- Premier Gord Campbell: July 14 "Thank you for your email regarding a federal government tax on natural gas. I am sharing your correspondence with the Honourable Colin Hansen, Minister of Finance. Please be assured that Minister Hansen will ensure you receive a response specific to your concern. Again, thank you for writing." (Since then no reply from Finance Minister!

My Province B.C. has recently put in a Carbon Tax. On my first bill from Terasen Gas for natural gas for my home this tax was included. However on close examination I noted that the Federal Government also taxed this tax with the 5% GST. Do you think this is correct. A tax on a tax. Only in Canada, Pity !
