Pilots at the Vernon airport no longer have to worry about having their wings clipped.

Negotiations for a 49 -year airport lease for lands at Vernon's airport wrapped up Thursday morning. Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert says the city has handed over a cheque for two hundred and seventy five thousand dollars for the first 5 year of the lease. "Essentially a lot of the lease agreement is still the same except for the dollar values. This is for 49 years, it's renewable every five years for a renegotiation of the price." The Jack family announced last month they'd be terminating the city's lease at the end of August as no agreement had been reached after two years of negotiations. They also told media the city had been attempting to blackmail them by threatening to cut off water and sewer services to their adjacent property, which city officials denied.

Don Quixote Note: The City had budgeted $50,075 in 2008, and a total of $250,450 over the next five years. This new lease agreement exceeds their 5 year budget by $24,550. Moreover the value of the $275,000 paid now over the next 5 years at 3%(conservative) interest is $318,800.

I am sure the City has had their lawyer review this but it appears concent of the electors is needed.
Liabilities under agreements
175 (1) A council may, under an agreement, incur a liability if
(a) the liability is not a debenture debt, and
(b) the period of the liability is not longer than the reasonable life expectancy of the activity, work or service under the agreement.
(2) Subject to subsections (4) and (5), if an agreement under subsection (1) is
(a) for more than 5 years, or
(b) for a period that could exceed 5 years by exercising rights of renewal or extension,
the council may only incur the liability with the approval of the electors.
The Taxpayers' Association should consider this agreement in light of the previous comment. This is a serious commitment!
It's getting close to the election, maybe we could have another petition or referendum!
Would the anonymous individuals above prefer that the Ciy just shut down the airport and lose the economic benefit of same.
Vernon will "Kill success" whenever they can.
Why can't you use your names rather that hiding behind "Anonymous".
Chub Down
It is not a matter of closing the airport or not. It is a matter of following due process. If this is a great deal and there is a requirement to complete the alternative approval process then the process will be complete. No harm done.
On the matter of posting annonysomsly. I look no further than the name Don Quixote used by this blogger. His real name is also hidden from the public.

This is one of first postings I reconstructed when my original blog went down back in 2005. In it my true identity is revealed. I post as Don Quixote but my real name is known by most of the regular blogreaders. My hobby is tilting at windmills and trying to keep my city taxes to a minimum. Whether you post anonymously or with a pseudonym or with your real name is entirely up to you.
I only hope that your comments are relatively respectful and not particularly libelous of others. I think my blog is as I state in the Don Quixote's Message to the Readers that can be found at the top right of the page.
Enjoy this blog for any use that you may make of it.
