Grandstand funds remain in limbo

It’s still not known whether Vernon’s Polson Park will ever have a grandstand again. It was two years ago that the historic grandstand was destroyed in an arson fire, and while issues surrounding insurance have been resolved, the Greater Vernon Services Committee hasn’t decided how to spend the money. “We want to keep it in parks and especially Polson Park,” said chairman Gary Corner. Corner would not provide details on how much the insurance money is worth. One possible initiative is some form of structure that would provide seating as well as other facilities. “I don’t think the grandstand will be rebuilt as it was,” said Corner. The future of a grandstand is also connected to discussions about revitalizing Greater Vernon’s primary green space. “Polson Park needs some improvements done to it and we had a design at one point, and we are looking at it,” said Corner. Director Wayne Lippert is frustrated that no decisions have been made on the grandstand insurance funds. “Nothing has happened and we need to get on with it,” he said. There’s been no clear direction on what we’re going to do.” While Lippert supports looking at the long-term vision of Polson Park, he insists that other recreational needs, such as a football field, must be considered a priority. “The whole parks plan could be affected by what we do in Polson Park,” he said.
