Chances Gaming has been approved for 15 new slot machines at its Halston location in the North Shore. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) completed its market study that indicated enough interest to add the 15 new machines. That brings the total number of slot machines at Chances to 65. The new machines are scheduled for installation at the end of September. In May, city council gave approval to Chances to add 25 new slot machines bringing the total allowed to 75. Chances was looking for a rezoning amendment that would allow for an unlimited amount of slots. After the decision by council, BCLC said it would complete a market study to determine just how many slots would be approved, if any at all. Any time a gaming centre wants to expand they have to apply to BCLC, who in turn will study the need.
“We want to provide quality entertainment options for the customers and what may make good business sense in the minds of the service provider, may not make good customer sense,” Angela Law, corporate communications officer with BCLC, said. Law noted more slots could be added in the future, but that would be something BCLC would need to evaluate. All the machines and property belong to BCLC. For its part, Chances Gaming was unaware of the results of the BCLC study and couldn’t comment.

Don Quixote Note: It would be interesting to see the market study that BCLC did when Vernon's Casino applied for expansion. Might be worth an FOI if BCLC does not bring it to Monday's meeting input meeting on limiting the slot machine to 300 in Vernon.
