Vernon seeks end of regional districts

107.5 KISSFM By Peter McIntyre

The city of Vernon is showing no signs of ending its feud with the North Okanagan Regional District. Councillor Barry Beardsell feels regional districts have served their purpose and should be scrapped in favour of district municipalities. "I think the province would be a lot better off. The present system is unfair. You should see the difference in taxation. It's incredible. Beardsell is leading a city effort to have the issue debated at this fall's Union of BC Municipalities convention in Penticton. City officials are upset at NORD's move to get rid of the Greater Vernon Services Committee. Beardsell says NORD is undermining the independence of the city. Councillor Jack Gilroy agrees, saying "something has to be done about NORD."
