A routine traffic stop in the North Okanagan lead to the shut down of a vendor’s booth at the IPE in Armstrong over the weekend. On Saturday, RCMP stopped a vehicle in a traffic stop near Armstrong. Four men were in the vehicle and it was soon discovered that three of them were carrying knives. Vernon RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk, says the knives were deemed prohibited under the Criminal Code. “The officer spoke with the three men and learned that they had purchased the knives from a vender at the IPE. Officers attended at the vender’s booth and seized over 300 assorted knives that he had for sale. After an inspection of all the knives seized, 103 of them were retained as prohibited weapons with the remainder being returned,” says Molendyk. He says crown counsel examined the knives and recommended that a destruction order be placed on the knives that were seized, as they fall in the category of prohibited weapons.
“The RCMP would like to advise anyone who purchased a knife at the IPE that fall under the following criteria, to dispose of it, as you could face a charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.” Section 84 of the Criminal Code states a prohibited weapon means: a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife. Molendyk says all of the knives seized opened automatically by centrifugal force.
