OTTAWA — Liberals are standing alone as the only party supporting Elizabeth May's bid to have the Green Party represented in the 2008 leaders debates -- an issue Canada's broadcasting heavyweights will be mulling privately today.Given Ms. May's public desire to have Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion become Prime Minister, the Liberal support is as vigorous as it is unsurprising. "She could be terrifyingly effective in critiquing the government on debate night," said Scott Reid, who helped prepare former Liberal leader Paul Martin for the past election debates. "Because she's not just eloquent, she's sincere." The consortium of broadcasters who decide the debate rules are scheduled to discuss the matter today by phone since three of the four party leaders in Parliament have come out against inviting Ms. May to join them on the most high-profile campaign stage.
